If police suspect drivers are affected by cannabis or methamphetamine (commonly known as Ice), they can administer a drug test during a road-side stop.
Police will continue to search vehicles if they suspect or receive intelligence in relation to people and vehicles involved in drug activity.
An incident occurred at 4.55pm Sunday, December 3. A 36-year-old Gloucester man was observed driving along Ravenshaw Street. The vehicle was stopped in Margaret Street for other traffic related offences. The driver submitted to a breath test which proved negative and then submitted to a road-side drug test which proved positive for methamphetamine. The driver, his partner and vehicle were searched with nothing found. He was arrested, taken to a roadside drug and alcohol testing truck operating at Stroud where he returned a positive test for methamphetamine. He was issued a notice prohibiting him from driving for 24 hours. Police are now waiting for lab results before initiating legal proceedings.
Following a long and protracted investigationn involving Gloucester Police, Newcastle region police and police from Manning Great Lakes Local area command, into alleged drug supply throughout the Gloucester and surrounding community, a 33-year-old Gloucester man has been arrested and will return to court in Taree early this year, charged with a string of offences. Following the execution of a search warrant and further investigations, the man has been arrested and charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity), possess or use prohibited weapon with permit, send prohibited weapons to other without permit, supply unregistered firearm, supply cannabis (commercial quantity), supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity), possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, possess prohibited drug, possess unregistered firearm and goods in custody. The accused is currently on strict conditional bail.
From local knowledge or information about persons and vehicles possibly involved in the use, distribution and sale of drugs throughout the Gloucester community, local police have targeted a number of individuals and vehicles.
