His resignation was announced at council’s ordinary meeting in Taree on Wednesday, December 20.
Speaking to Michael Spooner on ABC radio this morning (December 21) , mayor, David West confirmed Mr Handford would be leaving council after being head-hunted by a private company.
Mr Handford was appointed general manager of the newly formed MidCoast Council in July this year after leading the council in an interim position after Great Lakes, Greater Taree and Gloucester councils were amalgamated in May 2016.

Before being appointed general manager in 2010, Mr Handford began his working career with Great Lakes in 1994 as environment and planning director.
MidCoast and former Great Lakes councillor, Karen Hutchinson from Stroud last night wrote on Facebook: “I am devastated to say the least.”
Before the amalgamation Mr Handford was a great supporter of Great Lakes standing alone.
“Our general manager Glenn Handford has just resigned. He has been head-hunted.
“For those of us that worked with Glenn know what he has achieved in this council
“Thanks for the memories Glenn and all the best in your new position.”
Sharon Burke posted on Facebook: “Gee, this is sad news. Such a personable man who was willing to give of his time and more than happy to explain why they were taking certain actions, and so much more.”
While Troy Fowler posted: “A sad day in MidCoast Council history. For the short time that I have known him has been a privilege. Very hard shoes to fill. All the best in the future.”
Councillor Brad Christensen confirmed on social media Mr Handford had accepted a position in the private sector.
MidCoast Council is preparing a statement to address numerous questions presented for response by the Great Lakes Advocate.
