Spending time in a community is one way of understanding a different culture.
Home Among the Gum Trees strives to link asylum seekers with regional communities to help the families experience Australian cultural.
On Saturday, March 3 the local group is holding a fundraising and awareness raising event showing the movie, Constance on the Edge, a documentary of one refugee family’s struggle to settle into the Australian way of life.
Event organiser, Hilary Kite said the money raised will go directly toward supporting refugee families having a break from the city or detention by spending time a regional community.
“It’s an opportunity for people in these circumstances to see what it’s like in an Australian home,” she said.
The aim of the organisation is to break down the barriers and bring awareness to regional communities.
“There's a mixed reception to refugees in Australia.”
The movie starts at 3.30pm at the Uniting Church on Cowper Street, Gloucester and costs $15 or $12 for a concession at the door. To find out more contact Hilary on 6558 7436.
