Member for Upper Hunter, Michael Johnsen has called for the NSW Government to use some of the funds from the Federal Government’s purchase of the Snowy Hydro to be used to build a new coal fired power station in the Upper Hunter.

“We need more base load power in NSW and the new generation high energy low emissions (HELE) technology coal fired power station is ready to build,” Mr Johnsen said.
“We have the infrastructure, we have the need, we have the expertise and now we have the funds.
“Investment into a new HELE coal fired power station makes sense. It will ensure we replace base load power from retired old generation power stations and ensure we have safe, secure and affordable energy for NSW for decades to come.
“When I’m talking with families and business, their main concern is rising energy costs, we can fix this by building a new power station, increasing supply and lowering prices, so let’s get on with it,” Mr Johnsen said.
The purchase of the NSW and Victorian shares of the Snowy Hydro was announced today and is expected to net over $4 billion for NSW.
It would be sensible to utilise some of those funds to secure power and a lower cost for consumers.
“The only thing stopping us from building a new HELE power station is the political will, that’s not an excuse in itself. We have a responsibility to our citizens to provide low emissions, base load power at affordable prices, so let’s get on with it,” Mr Johnsen said.
