Gloucester High School students spend time in Gloucester businesses learning what it’s like to have a career
Gloucester High School (GHS) has been running its work experience program for more than 30 years, providing opportunities for students to spend time in the workforce.

This year, 54 year 10 students participated in the program, coordinated by GHS careers adviser, Michael De Angelis with most students working in industries around the region including several Gloucester businesses.
Students organise their two-week work placements with the help of Mr De Angelis and head out into the workforce to get an indication of what it will be like to work in their chosen industry.
At GHS students are taught how to present themselves and act accordingly in a workplace environment.
During their work experience, employees evaluate the students on their punctuality, their ability to comprehend instructions, general conduct, appearance and willingness to learn.
Throughout the two-weeks of work experience from April 3 to April 13, Riley Doutty travelled to Barrington, Taree and Harrington, improving his electrician skills with Bucketts Way Electrical, working as what he describes as a “mini apprentice”.
He undertook guided tasks such as domestic electrical jobs, fixing damaged pumps and faulty lights. Riley thoroughly enjoyed his time at Bucketts Way Electrical and hopes to pursue a career in this field.
Connor Grady found work placement for his second week in hospitality at Café 57. His duties included washing dishes and restocking the drinks fridge and coolroom.
“I love the environment of cafes and enjoy working with others,” he said.
Connor explained how social skills and teamwork are a requirement for a job in hospitality, as it’s needed to communicate with customers and other employees.
He enjoyed working at Cafe 57 and would like to seek employment in this area.
Helloworld Travel Gloucester gave Leah Smith the opportunity to join its team for a week, appealing to Leah’s keen interest in travel and organising holidays.
She was taught how to book flights and digitally organise itineraries, learning how communication and budgeting skills are an important part of a travel agent’s job.
Leah sees herself as an organised person and found the travel industry to fit well with her personality.
Through this experience, Leah hopes to acquire stronger social and digital skills and better understand the travel process.
