Gloucester artist, Christopher Steele merges traditional practice with contemporary technology in his “Nu Feminin” exhibition opening on Thursday, April 26 at Gloucester Gallery.
“I’ve been drawing since I was very young and making art in one form or another,” Christopher said. “I’ve been attracted to, and intrigued by, the female form from a young age.
“The female nude is an important, powerful and potent image in the history of art and society,” Christopher explained
This body of work represents a very contemporary image of the nude female figure.
After majoring in painting, drawing and wet photography in art school, Christopher has endeavoured to find a unique image and process to be able to achieve an artwork that is not common and overstated.
“This is very difficult in the current context with so much media access for individuals,” he said. “This body of work is still a developing technique.
“I’m still discovering the possibilities with so much more to discover.
“There are forms I can do by hand that I can’t do with a machine and there are things that I can do with the machine that I can’t do by hand,” he explained.
Christopher has chosen French titles for his works due to his love of the French modernists who had such an impact on contemporary practice through their concepts and techniques, as well as the prolific presence of the nude in the practice of the French modernists.
The exhibition runs until Sunday, May 20 with the official opening on Saturday, April 28 from 7pm. The Gloucester Gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sunday from 10am until 1pm.
