Year five and six students entered the Tell Me a Story writing competition, held in conjunction with the Great Lakes Advocate earlier this year, testing their writing skills against other primary school students.
BPS teacher, Debbie Faull came across the competition and thought it fit in perfectly with the students current narrative writing activities.
She encouraged her students to write a story about anything that interests them and to keep it within the 750 word limit in order to enter it in the competition.
The 22 BPS students were among the 48 entries from primary schools around the region, with seven of them receiving awards.
Selina Denyer and Kaitlyn Commons won excellence awards and $50 cash prizes and Samuel Ellis, Elana Pope, Emma Woods, Justin Battams and Hamish Laurie won highly commended certificates.
Competition judges were thoroughly impressed by the quality and varied styles of the entrants and decided to award several excellence awards and cash prizes, rather than determining first, second and third places.
“I am really proud of them,” Mrs Faull said.
“It gives the students an opportunity to put themselves out into a wider audience.”
Winners were invited to attend an award ceremony in Forster on April 19.
