The Gloucester District Sports Committee encourages local sporting clubs to nominate people for different categories in order to celebrate their achievements.
Nominations are collected and the winners are decided upon by the committee. All nominees are encouraged to attend the sports presentation, where the winners are announced.
This year’s event is being held on Saturday, May 12 at Gloucester Soldiers Club auditorium from 6pm. The closing date for tickets sales has been extended until Saturday, May 5. Tickets can be purchased at Furniture One on Church Street.
The nominees for Local Legends are:
Peter Green
Peter has bee nominated by the Gloucester District Tennis Association for his many years playing tennis.
He served as president of association for seven years from 1975 to 1981, during which time the club grew in strength and he was made a life member in 1981. Peter is still active at the courts, helping each year to prepare for our annual tournaments in April and October. He is always there to lend a hand whenever it is needed.
Brian Middlebrook
(Posthumous award) Cricket was Brian’s passion. He played it, coached it, organised it and even constructed a cricket pitch, complete with a net, at his old house in Wirrabirra. He was a fiery fast bowler who, at the age of 19, was selected for his first Gloucester representative team to play the John Bull Shield against Muswellbrook. Brian was instrumental in the foundation of the Gloucester Junior Cricket Association, the inaugural president and a life member.
Ollie Rinkin
Ollie is one of the founding members of Gloucester Hockey Association (1955) and is the current president. He played hockey for five decades, representing the region and the state; however, he is most proud of his achievements as an administrator, manager and coach. He has worked closely with students at Barrington Public School, St Joseph’s Primary School and still coaches Gloucester Public School in hockey and many local juniors during the season.
