There was an early touch of autumn in the air which was most welcome after the hot summer. Kim and Kevin began to establish their new garden about 12 months ago and it is a credit to them to see just how much they have achieved in that time. There were initially five trees on the one acre block but now there are many more, with some lovely garden beds, an expansive dam, an interesting herb garden, some very happy and productive chooks and two dear old dogs Lucy and Benji, which, create a very pretty and peaceful environment. We thank the Arneys for inviting us in their garden and Bruce Barnes for his efforts in planting hundreds of bulbs in the garden at Narraweema.
Margaret Blamires gave her regular advice on “what to do in the Garden in May” with a handy hint that if buying bare rooted roses, one should soak them in seaweed solution for an hour before planting to remove the protective gel coating from the roots.
The Trading Table was overflowing with plants and we appreciate members bringing in their excess plants to share around with everyone else. The usual Cut Flower and Fruit and Vege competitions were well supported, with the recent rain having brought on some excellent growth. The winners were: Flowers, 1st Peter Hazell with beautiful orchid, 2nd Frank Beggs with a delightful dahlia, 3rd Anne Williamson with a magnificent magnolia flower; Fruit and Veges, 1st Frank Beggs for his perfect purple beans, 2nd Anne Williamson with a robust red onion, 3rd Peter Hazell with his cracker cob of corn. Raffle winners: Robert Mendham, Di Relf, Pearl Beggs, Roslyn McIntyre, Anne Cullum and Bonnie Werz. Lucky Door prize to Jenny Wardle and Membership Draw to Frank Beggs.
