Celebrating sport

On Saturday May 12, the 2017 Gloucester Sports Star Awards took place at the Gloucester Soldiers Club  auditorium.

The Gloucester Sports Committee annual event had an impressive attendance, once again bringing the sporting community together for a night to celebrate achievements.

This years award’s were once again conducted by Master of Ceremonies (MC) 2RE radio presenter, Anthony Zanos.

Guest speaker former National Rugby League (NRL) referee, Michael Stone delivered anecdotes that brought smiles and laughs to the auditorium.

He shared with the audience his reasoning for becoming a referee in the first place, his wife nicknaming him “Fatso” which lead to him taking up refereeing on a local level to shed some weight.

This lead to a career that saw him refereeing the likes of State of Origin games.

When asked how he remains unbiased within the game he responded that “you just have to know that they all hate you anyway”.

A quick check in on the NRL match score took place just before the raffles and auction of a trailer load of firewood, donated by Bucketts Building Supplies.

Graham Stelzer took home the prize after some back and forth with Rodney Summerville for $400, all of which will be donated to the sports committee to ensure events like this continue.
