Nothing beats the feeling of bringing home a gold medal, and that’s exactly what Damian Martin did.
The former Gloucester resident was back in town visiting family and friends during the basketball off-season and while he was here he decided to show off his new Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Damian was part of the Australian men’s basketball team that won the 2018 gold medal the recent games in the Gold Coast, and with the medal in his hand, he couldn’t wait to come back to celebrate in his hometown.
He was first spotted in town on a visit to Barrington Public School on Wednesday May 30.
Then, on Thursday morning (May 31), he made is way to his former school, St Joseph’s Primary School to show the students his medal.
The Australian professional basketball player, for the Perth Wildcats, regularly takes time out to visit the schools in Gloucester.
He’s often seen having a quick chat or demonstrating a few skills around town, and this was no different.
Damian’s humility was evident as he freely passed around his gold medal, letting the students try it on and see how heavy it is.
Later that day, Damian’s medal was spotted again at the Gloucester High School’s Celebration assembly, but this time Damian wasn’t with it.
His mother, Anne works at the school and offered to bring it in as a way of showing the students what hard work can lead to. GHS was Damian’s high school, and he has been known to show up their from time to time.
