A goal to the Vikings 15 minutes into the first half saw Drifta ramp up their defensive line with Isaac Earle Broadley and Isaac McLure putting their bodies on the line, while Hayden Reid used his height to his advantage, heading the ball out of the goal area numerous times.
Beau Blanch, Aiden Hawkins and Cody Howard combined well together up front and were unlucky not to find the back of the net and provided plenty of action for the keeper.
Lane Edwards defended well and jockeyed throughout the game, while Josh Anniwell kept the Vikings at bay by saving at least 10 shots in the second half, diving confidently to save the goal and also deflecting a high, chip ball near the cross bar.
Kayden Schumann and Aiden Coombes worked well up front keeping the Vikings’ defensive line busy. Both teams fought hard with great spirit, final score 2-0 to the Vikings.
Drifta’s next game is against Tuncurry Gold At Tuncurry, kicking off at 10.30am, Saturday July 21.
Close call for Soldiers Club men
The Gloucester Soldiers Club men’s team knew they were in for a tough game when they heard they were up against a hot, in-form Wallamba side, who won last season’s grand final.
The first half was a very defensive approach from Gloucester but it couldn’t hold out a strike from Wallamba with three minutes before half time.
Soldiers Club lined up for a defensive second half for an attempt to keep the goals to a minimum. Gloucester made it 1-1 after a through ball to find fill-in Hayden Reid to chip a classy Wallamba keeper. Wallamba fought back while Daniel Hughes made some fantastic saves.
Wallamba scored their second goal late in the second half, with Gloucester coming away with a 2-1 loss.
