Forecasts were for gale force winds, the coldest temperatures of the winter so far, and snow later in the day.

Many layers, gloves, beanies and down jackets were donned, however, a mere one hundred metres along the track layers were being stripped off. 

The Corker Track is a challenging uphill walk, following a ridge line all the way to our intended destination of Careys Peak. A return trip of 22 kilometres.

Among our group was an avid birdwatcher, whose plan it was to meander a short distance and enjoy the many and varied birdlife. 

However, the roar of the wind through the trees meant hearing anything else, and pin pointing birdlife, was near impossible. The complaint was also made it was far too cold to travel slowly, so he joined the rest of us on our way up the mountain.

We passed through open woodland, rainforest, Antarctic beech and snow gums. We had great views of the Barrington wilderness when we stopped for morning tea at Governors Lookout.

After 9kms we had made it into the Wombat Creek campsite and stopped for a welcome bite to eat. Thank goodness for that thermos of hot coffee. At this point we agreed to abandon our trip to the summit of Careys Peak as the temperature was dropping and the wind was not abating.

On our way back down we bumped into two groups on their way up (20 people in total). Their plan was to camp in the snow and enjoy a different experience. Having had the experience of camping in snow and gale force winds at Wombat Creek before I was happy not to be sharing that experience again, but we wished them well on their adventure.

As we got closer to the cars the wind dropped and we were able to enjoy the chorus of birdlife, or maybe it was just one entertaining lyrebird. All in all it was a great adventure made all the more enjoyable by the camaraderie of the group.
