Last Saturday (August 11), they faced off against the Chatham Wolves, a team they have always had very tight matches against. This round started no differently as play went back and forth, neither team gaining any real advantage. Gloucester played beautifully an utilised their teammates as they passed well and used the width of the field to gain metres. After the first half, the score remained 0-0.

The second half proved to be change the team needed as they started throwing the ball around the D on attack, getting the Wolves out of position. Justin Battams was first to strike from a lead down the side from winger, Ryan Beggs. A wonderful cross from the right baseline was picked up by Justin and converted into the goal. Encouraged by this, it didn’t take long for the Panthers second goal. Supported by some absolutely brilliant work in the centre from players such as Dean Germon, Kyden De Angelis and Max Todd, the Panthers were able to pick up many of Chatham’s loose balls and keep them moving out of position. Toreen Denyer, reliable as ever, positioned herself well to pick up some play by Justin and Dean to get around the back of the goalie and convert.

Chatham came back hard and made some breaks down the right side, but each time was kept wanting as Darcey Fry, Nick Maslen and Max Todd held the back line. Another break from Dean and Justin through the centre gave Toreen her second opportunity at a goal which she took. Despite having no subs, the team kept pushing and keeping their opposition out time and time again. Elise Coombes in goals pushed back several attempts during short corners from the Chatham team. Kyden DeAngelis picked up a cross from Nick Maslen and was able to break forward, getting the ball onto his brother, Jonas DeAngelis. Play continued up the centre until a shot at goal from Justin was picked up by Ryan Beggs for Gloucester’s fourth goal.

With five minutes remaining, the team was starting to fatigue. Chatham’s centre forward made a break down the right side and got around the Panther’s defence to set up some play for a Chatham goal. They were able to convert a second goal a couple of minutes later off a short corner but it was not enough and the Panthers were able to hold their remaining time on the field to win 4-2. Everyone played extremely well holding their position and working as a team.

Play of the Day going to Kyden DeAngelis for his consistency and prowess through the midfield. With now just three matches remaining, Gloucester is very well placed for a secure spot in the semi-finals. Next week they face off against Wingham.
