Gloucester High School agricultural (Ag) department recently took possession of 10 merino lambs that had been orphaned as a result of the drought.

Agronomist, Troy Richards through his contacts with Landmark Townsend Scone, coordinated the operation with their agronomist, Maisie Marrow and transported the lambs to the school. The lambs have been adopted out to students in the year nine ag class. They will be responsible for the ongoing health and welfare of the animals. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to complement theoretical work being done in class. It also exposes students to the impact the drought is having on farming enterprises as well as providing an opportunity to help out.

Sheep at school

Wool and lamb production has started up again at the ag farm. With an identified gap in animal husbandry, Erin Blake, our new ag teacher went looking for sheep. Jenny and Howard Shultz, answered the call and have kindly donated a number of merino ewes. With a ram on the way, this flock (coupled with the recent addition of lambs) will enable students to get a hands on experience with the processes involved with running a sheep enterprise.
