It proved to be a bridge too far to get over Paterson River for the Gloucester Magpies, in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League premiership.

The minor premiers and previously undefeated, Magpies were soundly defeated in the grand final in front of a large contingent of local supporters at Lakeside Sports Centre in Raymond Terrace.
The Magpies were having difficulty maintaining possession, and with a string of penalties against them, Paterson River led 12-14 at half-time. Adding to Gloucester’s woes was losing centre, Lachlan Picton who was heavily concussed in a tackle.
Magpies attack never reached its usual effectiveness and it was obvious that Paterson had done their homework and learnt a lot from their loss in the major semi-final.
It was to the Magpies credit that they hit the lead midway through the second half only to be overrun 42-16 by the fast finishing Paterson River.
Gloucester’s success this season is solely due to captain-coach Andrew Middlebrook and the quality of the players he pulled together. Many players sacrificed pay and shifts at work to play for the Magpies, and I’m sure the younger players have benefited from playing alongside the more experienced.
Scorers for Gloucester were Jay Ferrie 1 try, Scott Wratten 2 tries, Glenn O’Davis 2 goals.
