Developing young cattle breeders is crucial to the future of the cattle industry.
This is the sentiment of Barrington Tops-based cattle breeder Ted Laurie, who for more than 30 years has made the trek to the Taree Show.
One of a handful of Gloucester area representatives at this year’s event, Mr Laurie brought over a couple of yearling bulls and heifers to show.
But it’s supplying cattle and giving support the junior show that gives him the most joy.
“It’s crucial to support the younger generations and give them every opportunity to handle cattle,” Mr Laurie said.
The fifth generation cattle breeder is a stalwart at shows across NSW including Gloucester, Maitland and the lower Hunter.
The bond between breeders is what keeps him coming back.
“I enjoy the personal camaraderie between the cattle exhibitors and breeders,” Mr Laurie said.
He works with his family to operate Knowla Livestock at Moppy, west of Gloucester.
The business encompasses 3100 hectares, running 1800 head and joining approximately 900 cows annually.
Their annual bull sale in August results in about 70 bulls and pens of unjoined heifers sold.
Mr Laurie said the company is one of many across the State to feel the pinch of drought.
“It was tough going but we consider ourselves better than most in the north west,” Mr Laurie said.
Earlier this year, Mr Laurie was the judge the Fairfax Agricultural Media Red Angus and Simmental National Show.
His experience extends to The Royal Show of England, The Royal Three Countries Show in the UK, The Perth Royal Show, The Brisbane Royal Show and the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
