Supported by the NSW Government, MidCoast Council hosted three free 'placemaking' masterclasses - in Bulahdelah, Forster and Gloucester, designed to boost local small business and also benefit customers and community with activated streetscapes – adding colour, movement, sound and interest along the footpaths.
Small Business Month is a NSW Government initiative which saw more than 150 councils and partners deliver 325 events with more than 5500 people participating throughout the State.
“The masterclasses aligned with our Vibrant Spaces initiative, providing practical information on street activation and business presentation,” economic development co-ordinator, Robyn Brennan said.
Placemaking expert David Engwicht provided an insight into his work throughout Australia and abroad in create engaging public places and give space 'back to the people'.
Business owners and operators workshopped ideas, shared experiences and came up with their own action plans.
“David identified six easy and practical ways to increase business” Ms Brennan said.
“We thank everyone who attended a masterclass – everyone’s input was valued and contributed to all participants’ ‘take homes’ from the workshops.
“It was great to have people from so many different town centres across the MidCoast working together to identify opportunities and support each other.
“It’s pleasing that everyone in the community will benefit from the outcomes of NSW Small Business Month and our placemaking masterclasses.
“We will continue to work closely with our businesses to develop a strong regional economy, with initiatives that support placemaking, for example, the introduction of mobile games on our streets.”
