That was the motivation behind the Gloucester Breast Cancer Support Group’s recent pampering day, where members were able to sit back, relax and be spoilt.

Group president, Diana Rosenbaum said it was important to provide a day of pampering for the ladies.

“We’re in an isolated area,” she explained. “ The ladies can’t get to a Look Good Feel Better program.”

Look Good Feel Better is a free national community service program run by the Cancer Patients Foundation, dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side-effects caused by cancer treatment.

The closest ones are generally in Newcastle, which can make it difficult for women in Gloucester to attend, so the group decided to host a pampering day.

“It’s about providing it for the ladies here,“ Diana explained.

On Tuesday November 13, around 20 women spent the day at the Gloucester Uniting Church.

It kicked off around 10am with a morning tea, followed by a range of treatments on offer for free.

There was foot massage, manicures, relaxation massage, hair styling, hand massage and facials.

The women were free to choose which treatments they wanted.

There was a lot of chatter and laughter as the women enjoyed a day of feeling special and bonding with their girlfriends.

“When you have (cancer) treatment, it can cause depression,” Dianna explained. “A pampering day is an uplifting experience and it can make you feel better.

“When I lost my hair I thought it was just another thing I had to deal with,” she said.

For fellow group member, Bev Green it’s about creating a positive feeling for the women.

“You feel very flat,” Bev said. “It’s amazing how just a little bit is so uplifting.”

The group tries to run events every so often to help provide support for women in Gloucester with cancer diagnoses. Earlier in the year, they held a morning tea and massage.
