These range across a broad spectrum of body and brain exercising activities including easy walking, Mahjong, ukulele strum, indoor bowls, singing for fun and card games.
It is safe to say that there is something to interest anyone and everyone.
A full program can be found on the U3A website https://gloucester.u3anet.org.au.
U3A originated in France and is now a worldwide organisation, open to anyone 50 years and older and is retired or semi-retired.
The concept spread throughout France and other countries, particularly continental Europe.
An international association of U3As was established by 1975.
By 1984, the first Australian U3As were formed in Melbourne.
It took some time to get the Gloucester branch up and running.
It was inaugurated on August 27, 2008.
Dr Garry Lyford, senior partner at Gloucester Medico, said activities and courses through the U3A organisation help the health and well-being of the older members of society.
“it is well recognised by medical professionals that the intellectual brain activities and the physical activities available to U3A members can contribute substantially to helping them lead long, healthy and fruitful lives,” Dr Lyford said.
U3A enrolment day is Tuesday, January 29 from 10am to noon at the Uniting Church Hall, 5 Cowper Street Gloucester.
Potential new members will be warmly welcomed and current members will be delighted to answer any questions, while all present will enjoy morning tea provided by the committee.
Membership fee is $25 per year or $45 for two people at the same address with a one off $5 joining fee and $10 for a name badge.
The first term runs until Friday, April 12. Enrolment day for term two will be April 29. Full membership details also appear on the U3A website.
