That precisely what the Gloucester Scout Group is all about.

Running on the philosophy of contributing to the education of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities, the group is looking for new members.

On Sunday, March 17, the Gloucester Scout Group is holding an open day which is all about providing information for parents and giving children aged five to 15 years the chance to try it out.

Taking place at the Scout Hall in the art pavilion at the Gloucester Showground between 1pm and 4pm, there will be a few Scout activities organised, as well as the opportunity to talk to the Scout leaders about what the organisation has to offer.

According to group leader Heather Eggins, Scouts is all about learning skills for life. The children learn independence and leadership through camping based activities, which includes campfire cooking, orienteering and the construction of things like flagpoles. The Gloucester group is lucky enough to have its own campground just outside of Gloucester, making it the perfect place for the children to practice their skills. The group is open to both boys and girls, and encourages children try new things and build new friendships.

The Scouting groups are broken up into age divisions. Joeys are aged between five and eight years, Cubs are between eight and 11 years, while Scouts are 11 to 15 years. Groups are run by volunteer leaders who are usually parents, something the Gloucester group is also looking for interest in.

Regular meeting times are: Joeys from 6pm to 7pm on Monday; Cubs from 5.30pm to 7pm on Thursday; Scouts from 6pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday. The club is taking names for children aged 15 to 18 years interested in the Venturers group.
