A number of past members joined the event and an enjoyable evening was spent reminiscing about old times. It is encouraging that the expansion of activities undertaken by the group over the years, and how the group has evolved, has meant increased participation by a larger number of community members.
A key part of the celebrations was the announcement of a new life member, Penny Drake-Brockman. Penny is the current leader of our RiverCare band of weeders and planters, one of the organisers for the Gloucester Environment Group Koala Tree Planting Project, and our expert leader on the group’s bird walks.
The group has much to thank Penny for as she shares her knowledge of birds, and enthusiastically encourages group members to join her in caring for the environment. She has produced a pamphlet on bird watching in the Gloucester area and conducted a study on the grey crown babbler, an endangered species found locally.
On the morning of the February 16, Penny led a small group of members in a walk around the Gloucester parks, pointing out the clearing and planting done over the years by RiverCare. It was great to see the results of all the hard work. And, being Penny, she couldn’t help stopping to pull weeds along the way. At King George Park, Garry Lyford shared what he knew about the first Gloucester coal mine situated in that area. It was interesting to see the coal seam still evident around the river bend.
The next activity of the GEG is our monthly walk on Saturday, March 16. We will meet at Billabong Park at 8.45am for 9am departure to Saltwater. Call Pat Burrows on 0401 798 382 for more.
