As community is the heart of the Rotary movement, the "Unsung Hero" Awards were initiated by the Gloucester club as an acknowledgement of the vital role that volunteers and dedicated employees play in our community, and the need to recognise their efforts.
The successful nominee is expected to have provided a community service which would be at least in part a voluntary service which has benefited our community over a number of years.
A number of these nominees, over the years, have not wanted to be recognised, citing that they are not "heroes". In the hope of many more accepting these nominations, the club has changed the award to "Community Citizen Award".
The successful awardee will receive a plaque at a ceremony at a meeting of the Rotary Club on Tuesday May 21. In addition the winner will receive a cheque for $250 to be donated to a community service charity organisation of their choice.
We seek the community's support in making this award a success and encourage you to identify and nominate a suitable candidate who has made a significant contribution to your service organisation or to the community in general, and whose service may have yet gone unrecognised.
Nomination forms are available at Helloworld, Gloucester Bookshop, Gloucester Pharmacy, Bowe and Lidbury. Nominations close on Friday April 19 and should be sent to the Secretary, PO Box 43, Gloucester 2422.
