Energise Gloucester (EG) is not only a name that describes this group's plan to build community-owned renewable energy sources for Gloucester but epitomises the members' passion for their projects.
After initiating from the 2015 Sustainable Futures Convention and launching its first community project early last year involving solar panels on the roof of the Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Centre, the group has set its sights on a solar farm.
The plan is for the Gloucester Community Solar Farm to generate electricity to sell to Gloucester residents, which is operated by a co-operative.
The proposed 500kW system would have the potential to generate power to support around 125 households.
As a way to get their plan in motion, the group has applied for a grant through the NSW Government Regional Community Energy Fund for just over half of the cost of the $920,000 initial project development costs.
According to EG chair David Marston, the group is hopeful it will receive the grant for the $460,000 requested.
"The committee has been planning this solar farm for over a year and has a very good design and costing plan," David said.
"This project is supported in principle by the Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group, Gloucester Business Chamber and Essential Energy.
"Discussions about planning approval have been held with MidCoast Council and support has been received from our local members of parliament," David said.
David explained that the remaining funds for the project will need to be raised by the community, hence the co-operative structure.
The proposed solar farm is planned to be underway by February 2022 and is expected to generate $1,278,500 of electricity over its 20-year lifespan.
"It will be a great development for Gloucester and, if successful, a model for several other solar farms in our area," David said.
