Under the Australian Government's Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, works will commence later this month along a 1.3km stretch from south of Limeburners Creek Road through to the Old Coach Road intersection, at the southern end of the Bucketts Way.
The project includes construction of overtaking and turning lanes. Part of this project is within the Port Stephens Local Government Area and all works will be undertaken by MidCoast Council.
Also soon to commence is the rehabilitation of a 1.5km section of the Bucketts Way at Craven including road widening and construction of a passing lane.
Meanwhile, widening and reconstruction of the 1.4km section between Manchester Street at Tinonee and Peg Leg Creek is in progress, and is expected to be complete by September.
The second stage of this project will see improvements continue through to the Bootawa Road intersection in the next financial year. Both stages are funded by the NSW Government in association with MidCoast Council as part of the $100 million road upgrade package.
"The Bucketts Way carries a significant volume of freight, tourist and local traffic," Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council's manager of projects and engineering. "It connects the Mid Coast, as well as the Hunter, to other parts of the State, and it's an important B-Double route."
The Limeburners Creek and Craven projects are jointly funded from RestartNSW through Infrastructure NSW, The National Land Transport Act through the Federal Department of Regional Development and Cities, and from MidCoast Council's capital works program.
"Our focus remains on improving the local transport network, in particular delivering safety improvements on the roads that connect our communities," Rhett said.
"By targeting high volume and freight routes, and applying techniques that assist in extending the life of our roads, our aim is to continue to deliver on one of our community's highest priorities."
