Every year on the last Sunday of June, from dawn to dusk, whale watchers gather on coastal vantage points to count humpbacks during their migration for the ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) Annual Census Day.
This year, 2019, marks the 20th year that counting has taken place by the not-for-profit organisation.
You can help with the census, which this year takes place on Sunday, June 30. Take yourself off to your favourite coastal lookout or headland. Don't forget your binoculars, a camera, something to sit on, a pen or pencil to record your sightings not only of whales, but dolphins and seals.
If you are taking part, you must email ORRCA ahead of time to register your location, and download log sheets from their website.
At the end of the day, sightings are to be reported by emailing your results.
