The championship was held across two days, with the first session of play being held on Monday, June 17, followed by the finals on Wednesday, June19. It was played as a 13-point game with the first to seven being declared the winner.
The eight players contested the event in a knock-out style, with competitors getting two chances at the finals positions, meaning after two losses, they were out of play.
Monday's results were:
Carol Dwyer: 4-7, 7-2, 1-7
Brenda Pennicuik: 4-7, 6-7
Paul Cusack: 0-7, 2-7
Ashleigh Hickman: 7-5, 3-7, 2-7
Lyn Stewart: 5-7, 7-6, 7-1, 7-5, 3-7
Col Weismantel: 7-4, 7-3, 5-7, 5-7. It was good to see Col participating at this level. He has been playing club days but this was his first competition after a long illness.
Yvonne Bagnall: 7-4, 6-7, 7-2. Yvonne then had a bye, followed by a 7-3 win. With only one loss, Yvonne progressed to the finals.
Al Minis: 7-0, 7-6, 7-5. Unbeaten, Al also progressed to the finals.
Wednesday afternoon, Yvonne and Al took to the croquet field to battle it out for the club champion title. After a well played match by both players, Yvonne defeated Al 7-3. As this was Al's first loss of the championships, he had the right to challenge Yvonne to another game. In a much tighter scoreline, Yvonne still managed to hold on for a win of just one point, ending at 7-6.
There were some very close and entertaining games played throughout the competition. It was also good to see so many spectators come along for the finals on the Wednesday afternoon.
