However Drifta began the game feeling confident, with Kayden Schumann, Cody Howard and Lane Edwards targeting Tuncurry's keeper early. Their defender took a free kick, sending the ball the length of the field, connecting with a striker, but keeper Isaac Earle-Broadley took control of the ball. Both teams fought hard for the entire 35 minutes, bringing the half time score to 0-0.
Returning to the field, Tuncurry brought on a more physical game, contesting the ball at every opportunity with a plethora of tough tackles and free kicks given. Shots were fired evenly from both teams putting the goalkeepers under plenty of pressure, with nervous moments in front of goals, and corners taken, only to have the whistle blow again at full time, and extra time, still scoreless.
History repeated itself, with these two evenly matched teams. Two years ago in a deadlock at extra time in the final series, the game also went to penalty shootout, Drifta claiming victory.
Nerves settled in on the pitch and flowed across to the sidelines as the teams lined up in preparation for a shoot out. Josh Anniwell stepped up first in the line up, finding the net easily. Tuncurry's defender first in their line up retaliated and found the back of our net, while Lane Edwards's ball unfortunately skimmed past the post.
Tuncurry's next shot was shut down by Isaac Earle Broadley and Sam Leimgruber's ball was stopped by Tuncurry's keeper. Their next attempt found the net, Drifta's Kelly Groves slammed the ball into the top right hand corner. Tuncurry's next ball also saved by Isaac Earle Broadley. Kayden Schumann's ball mirrored Kelly's target of top corner.
With Drifta now sitting on three goals and Tuncurry at two, coming down to their fifth shooter with all the pressure on them. When the whistle blew as Tuncurry's shot was shut down by Isaac Earle Broadley putting his body on the line, emotions went flying across the field as the realisation hit home that Drifta will now progress straight to the grand final (to be played in two weeks time).
