The Gloucester Mountain Man Tri Challenge lives up to its names by offering a monster challenge on every leg.
Between Heartbreak Hill on the bike leg, the unpredictable water level in the river, and the option to jump a cattle fence during the run, the challenge keeps the competitors on their toes.
Now in its 29th year, the event once again brought more than 200 competitors to Gloucester on Sunday, September 8.
Event organisers and committee members have always looked for ways to get more local competitors and this year saw an exceptional turn out. After years of pleading with his twin brother, James Saunders finally convinced Raymond to take part. Not only did the brothers have an impressive result, James placing fifth overall and Raymond taking 13th, the pair were the two fastest in the local division, followed by long time competitor, Brett Radford.
There were two women vying for the top local spot with Kim Haschek crossing the line before Jules Kitchener. Kim finished fifth overall and Jules 10th.
When it came to the local teams, Peter Beard, Dave Keen and Rob Seale took out the top place for the third year in a row, with Naomi Kilby, Margo Cameron and Deborah Sheely in second.
But it wasn't just the adults who were out in impressive numbers, it was the juniors that stole the show. Four boys, Nicholas Maslen, Caiden Wakefield, Anthony Shultz and Harrison Edwards took on the entire challenge as individuals, with Harrison taking out third place in the juniors overall.
In the team category, Tristyn Beard, Amy Shultz and Courtney Webeck (guided by Tahnee Yates) work together as the Highschool Hillbillies, while Hayden Schultz, Kyden De Angelis and Sam Whittaker competed as the Gloucester Hurricanes. Each team came open in their division.
Ryan Latimore and Mitchell Hawkins took on The Buckett's Ride which consists of just the bike leg, Mitchell only beating Ryan's time by a few minutes.
Overall the event has seen another successful year with more competition registered that the year before. Despite the gust of winds and the lack of rain, competitors enjoyed the challenge and the friendly Gloucester atmosphere.
It's an event that is fueled solely by the dedication, devotion and passion of a large number of volunteers.
