During this time of celebration and giving thanks, the market organisers, Caitlin Tonelli and Sarah Fulton are encouraging people to think about buying a simple and practical gift to help all those doing it a bit tough this Christmas.
As the next market, held on Saturday, December 14 in Billabong Park, is the last one before the big day, 'Care Cash' vouchers will be on sale that can be redeemed at participating retailers in Gloucester.
"It hits home even harder at this time of year how much our farmers are struggling and often it's difficult to know how to help," Caitlin said.
"It may not seem like much but something as simple as a lending hand towards groceries or farm supplies can make a difference."
But it's a sentiment that extends to anyone in need this Christmas or anytime throughout the year, Caitlin explained.
"If you know of someone who needs a helping hand, a neighbour or even the elderly in our community, these vouchers are an ideal practical gift."
This initiative is also about supporting local businesses who are also feeling the domino effect of the drought.
"It's incredibly important to us in our role at the Gloucester Farmers Market to be consistently mindful of ways to support our community as well as our local and regional economy, hopefully this is a small but effective step in doing that," Sarah explained.
For the Caitlin and Sarah, it's regular events like the farmers market that personifies the commitment to supporting the region's local growers, and by adding in the option to extend that support to the bricks and mortar businesses, this support can be expanded to benefit more of the community.
"Understandably there are people in our rural community who struggle to ask for help, we're hoping these vouchers are a subtle but heartfelt opportunity to show you care," Sarah said.
There are a few businesses already signed up to be a participating retailer, but there's always room for more. To have your business included, contact Caitlin or Sarah through the market's Facebook page.
