It's a course that Gloucester's Aiden Hawkins took on board in early 2018 hitting the books hard in order to gain his level four referee accreditation.
Aiden has been around soccer most of his life, as a player on the field, as a volunteer and refereeing in the Summer 6's and winter competitions for the Gloucester Soccer Club. After gaining some experience referring, he decided to look into what it takes to be an official referee.
He completed the online test, the full day face to face theory lesson in Tuncurry and the practical component at Taree being signed off as competent for junior refereeing, gaining Level 4 accreditation.
Aiden officiated his first game in April 2018 as centre referee at Gloucester in the 13's match against Taree Wildcats. In August, he was awarded the Newcastle Permanent Community Referee of the Month for all of the seven zones in the Northern NSW Football.
Interested upcoming referees can take part in the level four courses to be held in Taree on Sunday, February 23 and Tuncurry on Sunday, March 15. With others to be held at Kempsey and Port Macquarie.
Referees are required to be at least 13-years-old or turning 13 in 2020.
A level three course, for qualified level four referees, will be held at Laurieton. Participants must be 16-years-old or turning 16 in 2020.
