To make things simple, the national not-for-profit organisation GIVIT works to link services providers and charities directly with things people need.
GIVIT's Scott Barrett recently visited Gloucester to encourage organisations to get signed up in order to tap into people wanting to offer a helping hand.
GIVIT was started in 2009 by Queensland mum, Juliette Wright OAM after discovering how hard it was for charities to get the items people really needed. After successfully helping many Queenslanders, the charity as now made its way into NSW and with the administration costs are covered by the State Government, donations go directly to the people.
Service organisations can list the items people need like white goods, school clothes or furniture and donors can simply choose which ones they'd like to supply.
The items are then provided by GIVIT to the service organisation who distributes it to the person in need. Donors can also choose to donate money which goes toward purchasing essential items.
Scott's visit to Gloucester was spurred on by St Paul's Anglican Church, Gloucester who'd contacted the organisation to get signed up.
"I came into to Gloucester to purchase $4500 worth of food vouchers to give to the Anglican church," Scott said. "It's important for us to use the money donated to purchase items within the community to help support the local businesses."
While in town, he was looking to reach out to other Gloucester service organisations so they can get access to the items they need.
"P and Cs can also sign up to help families in need with school items," he said.
The website runs a range of disaster campaigns including drought, flood, bushfire, indigenous support and a back to school appeal.
For people in need, all they have to do is go to the local service organisation or charity. For more information, visit www.givit.org.au
