HNEH is also providing "hospital in the home" care to 12 patients in the Greater Newcastle region.
Across the district, an additional 29 patients have recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases recovered to 117 so far.
'Recovery' is a confirmed case who is now well and is no longer in isolation. They can leave isolation if at least 10 days have passed since the onset of symptoms, and there has been resolution of all symptoms of the acute illness for the previous 72 hours.
Hunter New England Local Health District's public health physician, Dr David Durrheim thanked the recovered patients and their close contacts who have helped contain the very serious virus.
"Through no fault of their own, these people contracted COVID-19 and put their work and social lives on hold, working closely with us and observing strict isolation to prevent the further spread of the illness and protect our communities," Dr Durrheim said.
"In many cases, they were asked to isolate weeks before lock-downs and social distancing were broadly introduced across the State. We acknowledge it hasn't been easy.
"We thank the patients and their communities for their commendable effort, which has significantly limited community transmission.
"While we're pleased many patients are recovering well, it's important to highlight the virus is potentially fatal, particularly to at-risk community members.
"Sadly, we are currently caring for five patients in our ICUs, which is a clear reminder we all need to do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19."
