In lieu of selling fresh flowers on Church Street, as they have been doing for the past 30 years or so, the group is putting a call out for people to knit or crochet beanies or scarves to support the cause.

When publicity officer Margaret Andrews got the email from the Cancer Council about the Knit for Cancer drive, she thought it would be a good way for the group to get back to work.

"We've been very limited with what we can do," Margaret explained. "When I saw this come through, I suggested we try it."

She put the call out to a couple of groups she's involved in and within week she was receiving completed beanies.

"I told the patchwork group on Tuesday and the next week I was handed one beanie," Margaret smiled. "I told the ladies at the bowls on Wednesday and a week later one of the members presented me with three."

To get involved, you'll need to get one of the patterns which are available through the Cancer Cancer or via Margaret on 6558 1485 and abide by the preferred colour scheme of blue, grey and white.

There are patterns available to suit women, men and children.

Once you've completed a beanie or scarf you can pass it onto Margaret.

The completed items will be sent through to Cancer Council to either be sold as a fundraiser, or given to people undergoing treatment.
