Adam Glew took over the reins several weeks ago and he's hoping to help boost the numbers across the board, from joeys through to leaders.
Gloucester had been without an active scout group for 20 years or so before a few eager parents, which included Adam, started making enquiries.
They were so determined to get the group up and running that according to Scouts district commissioner, Stan Woodrow, "the time taken for the group to start to take root (was) absolutely unprecedented."
In 2017, the first bit of paperwork was submitted to Scouts NSW on September 12 and by November 11 all the necessary checks and training were completed.
The group kicked off November 20, 2017 with strong numbers for the newly reformed club.
"When we started we had almost 50 kids and eight leaders," Adam explained.
But given the situation over the past 12 months, with drought, bushfires and a global pandemic, the numbers have dropped considerably.
According to Adam, there was a slow decline leading up to COVID-19, with leaders struggling to manage the time commitment and consequently taking their children with them when they left. Then the COVID restrictions came into play and the group had to ease its activities.
"Since we've started meeting again some of the members haven't yet returned," Adam explain.
So, part of his goal as new group leader is to try to get interest back into the group. Scouts is all about learning valuable life skills, including everything from how to cook to how to build a structure out of rope and wood.
Due to the size, the group now meets as one on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Gloucester Showground.
Scouting has four age groups and includes boys and girls. Joeys is for 6 to 8 year olds, Cubs is for 8 to 11 year olds, Scouts is 11 to 15 year olds and Venturers is for 15 to 18 year olds.
