The dinner is normally a well-attended and rousing celebration of the year of veterans' golf and so it was again. This year there was a special commemoration of the 17 or so years Bill Murray has served the Gloucester Veterans Golf Club as its captain, a role he relinquished at the recent AGM. A larger than life figure, Bill has been central to Gloucester vets being one of the most successful veteran golfers' groups in the district. Bill was also a key figure in establishing and maintaining the 'Gloucester Week of Veteran's Golf' as one of the most well attended and successful events in NSW's veteran golfers' calendar.
Bill was made a life member of veterans' club and presented with a pictorial representation of his presence and significance for veterans' golf for the club.
Other presentations in a happy evening of celebrating achievements were for the highest individual stableford scores for men and women veterans Tony Burnet 42 and Sally Higgins 41 respectively. The most consistent players were Mark Stone and Tony Burnet for the men and Elaine Murray and Dale Rabbett for the women.
The president's award for outstanding contribution to Gloucester vets went to Ian Maggs. Mark Stone's hole-in-one at the sixth as well as Steve Hurworth's eagle 2 at the ninth were acknowledged.
Now to more mundane matters perhaps: Tuesday's veteran golfer's event was a four ball better ball Stableford sponsored by Peter and Sherry Wildblood. Conditions were sunny and generally mild with a slight breeze all of which were responsible no doubt for the high scores.
The winners were Phil Hawkins and Mark Howland with a top score of 47 points; runners up were Elaine Murray and Graham Hjorth 45, with the ball competition going to Dale Rabbett and Jim Dunn 44, Steve Horvath and visitor Don Ellercamp 43 and, on a count back on 42 Jim Dunn and Steve Kriss.
Next Tuesday's competition is an individual Stableford sponsored by Denver and Catherine Webb. It is also the 'Thoughts of Bill Radford Day' commemorating the contribution the key role Bill played in establishing the Gloucester veterans and his many years as its treasurer.
