After almost a year of working toward the inaugural event held in Gloucester District Park on Saturday January 25, things came to a grinding halt on March 17.
Due to government restrictions in the wake of the global pandemic, all of the weekly five kilometre parkruns Australia-wide were cancelled.
It was sad news for all the community members who had worked so hard to get the event up and running in the first place and for everyone who looks forward to a bit of social exercise in the park.
In lieu of an organised event, people were encouraged to continue with their own private run or walk and to stay 'virtually connected' through the Facebook page.
While other sports around the country were slowly allowed to recommence, parkruns where forced to 'sit and wait' for their turn.
Finally on Friday, December 4, Gloucester District parkrun posted the good news, that NSW has been given the approval starting running.
It follows the lead of Queensland parkrunners who hit the ground running last month, and South Australia who resumed last weekend.
Gloucester's big day will take place on Saturday, December 19 and the call has been put out for people to volunteer. Each run needs around five people to help out with the registration and timing, which can happen on a rotating roster.
Typically the event will take place every Saturday morning from 8am at the Junior Cricket Oval behind the grandstand at the Number One Oval in Gloucester District Park. For more information visit the Facebook page.
An estimated 500 people from Gloucester and beyond took park in the Gloucester District parkrun's inaugural event on January 25.
A parkrun is 5km in length and each participant takes part at their own pace and can either walk or run.
