The peewees have grown into fully fledged magpies, with a strong contingent of local players starting to come of age. Co-coach Steve Forrest said 28 players are on the books so far; many aged 18 and 19.
"A few of them haven't played before," Steve said.
Numbers have been strong at training, which started mid-January. The smallest group to attend training was 17 players, which is quite strong for early in the pre-season.
"We've been looking good," Steve said.
It's unknown, at this stage, which division the side will contest.
"We don't get graded until after the first five games," Steve explained.
"We could be put into the northern division but if we win the five games we could be put into C grade."
There's speculation the league could put the Magpies with other local sides such as Stroud, Karuah, Dungog and Raymond Terrace in the northern division.
"That'll mean better crowds for the local derby games," Steve said.
Steve hasn't singled out a captain yet but ruled himself out of a captain/coach role.
"I have a few people in mind but I don't want to say anything yet," Steve said.
Steve will line-up in the front row for the side in what will be his 23rd season of rugby league.
Five-eighth Riley Collins could be set for a big year. In round one, he will strap up for his 99th consecutive game for the Magpies.
"He leads the boys around really well and will be great for our young guys," Steve said.
Steve will co-coach the side with Craig Murray. Craig was set to coach the side last year before the pandemic forced the club to withdraw.
During the time off, the club completed several long planned projects at Bert Gallagher Oval.
The Magpies will tackle Group Three Rugby League side Old Bar Pirates in a trial game on Saturday March 27. In the meantime, the club will still welcome new players. To get involved, contact the club via Facebook.
"We're still looking for some 'big boppers'," Steve added.
