The rumours are wrong. The Cockies are well and truly alive in spirit, if not in an active capacity, not this winter, anyway.
"We held a meeting and talked the matter over early this year whether we could field a women's team," 30-year-old mother of three, Kayla Jory said.
"We had eight registered women players for Gloucester club, but some of the girls were in the family way and as the Lower Mid North Coast women's competition was scheduled as a 10-player-a-side premiership, and injuries happen, we were not sure of the wisdom of announcing we could definitely field a team regularly.
"Wauchope Thunder indicated they were short of players and eventually we decided it would be safer to play for them. It's a good hour and half drive to Wauchope, but they made us feel at home and so far the season has gone well," she said.
"We have had as many as four Gloucester women play with Wauchope this season. We had a good win over the Manning River Ratz on Saturday (May 15)."
In anyone's language 50-5 is a wonderful win, and, is invariably the case, the Thunder will take a power of beating when the semi-finals begin.
Most pleasingly, Michael Wooster, now one of the region's leading referees, and a retired veteran front rower of the Cockies XV, indicated that his information was that Gloucester would again field both men's and women's teams in the Lower MNC competitions next winter.
Optimistically, Chris Marchant, a splendid coach who made the women's team a power of the region in recent seasons, although now involved in the development of young players, will be persuaded to return with the Cockies.
