Fourteen members made up the Gloucester side where we played 12 singles matches and 12 doubles.
Playing two singles each were: Yvonne Bagnall with one win of 7-4 and 5-7, Alec Bruce with two wins 7-6 and 6-5, Norma Slade one win 7-2 and 2-7, Brenda Pennicuik one win 7-1 and 4-7. Bev Fagan played one and came away with a win 7-4 and Ken Gosson finished with 5-7.
Also playing singles for a first time in inter-club competition were newer players Denise Bruce and Jenni Sun. Whilst they didn't come away with a win, both played well and will have gained from the experience.
In doubles Yvonne Bagnall and Denise Bruce had a win 7-5, Yvonne also had another win with Norma Slade 7-6. Yvonne is still very consistent in her game in singles and makes a very reliable doubles partner. Brenda Pennicuik and Bev Fagan just came away with a win 7-6 and Alec Bruce and Bev Murray had a very close encounter in their doubles, going down 6-7 on the last hoop.
After a close game all through and taking the game to 12-all, the 13th hoop ended up being a marathon effort which unfortunately ended going Port Macquarie's way. Alec and Bev thought it had been a hard game to play while several spectators commented on it having been a really great game to watch.
Others to come in close were Norma Slade and Jenni Sun 5-6, Ken Gosson and Elaine Leech 5-7, Brenda Pennicuik and Robyn Franks 5-7, Bev Fagan and Mae Bobsien 4-5, Ken Gosson and Jenni Sun 4-5, Elaine Leech and Robyn Franks 5-7, Elaine Leech and Bev Fagan 4-5, and Alec Bruce and Mae Bobsien 5-7.
Assisting Bev with games organisation, as well as taking care of the catering was Carol Newitt, who did a stellar job all day.
It was an excellent day of competition and friendship. Gloucester didn't come out overall winners, but majority of the games were very close. Hoops scored were 139 to Port Macquarie and 127 to Gloucester.
Gloucester has had one win (against Forster) and now gone down to Port. We will next meet Taree in the third and final of the Mid North Coast Croquet competition, which is anticipated will be played in June.
