Mathew jumped out of the gates leading seven shots to two early in the match but at the halfway mark the score was locked at fifteen all which prompted Mathew to play beautiful draw bowls to run away with the game for a well deserved 31-20 victory and now will be a threat to the major singles players in future years.
The first round of the men's fours championships were eventually contested on Saturday after a COVID delay with the team of Col Linton, Mark Tull, Jason Collins and Peter Jones having a comfortable win 30-10 over Graham Turnbull, Don Mehieloff, Chris Pritchard and Robbie Bowden.
Mike Sheely, Nico Duynhoven, Norm Mcleod, Dennis Bartlett were down 17-14 but collected six shots on the last three ends to defeat Kevin Everett, Rob Heininger, Peter Sansom and Neville Atkins 20-17.
And Gary Spokes celebrated his birthday with some great shots when required to combine with George Wisemantel, Terry Carson and Gary Moss to defeat the Groves family of Mark, Stacey, Phillip and Wayne 26-19.
The old stalwarts Col Hebblewhite, Bruce Wilson, Vic Hebblewhite and Kevin Baker proved too strong for Robert Hayes, Steven Higgins, Stephen Hurworth and Andrew Henderson only conceding three shots in the last thirteen ends for a19-9 victory.
The 2020 champion side of Jason Cassidy, Steve Brown, Craig Yates and Terry Davies are chasing back to back titles when they defeated John, Jamie and Mitch Andrews and Steve Kriss 31-12.
And in a nail-biter Lu Urby, Gordon Pritchard, Tony Tersteeg and Allen Rose were holding a one point lead with the last end to play and picked up one shot for a 21-19 win over Aaron Kelly, Brian Holstein, Ken Bryant and Alex Laurie.
The next round will be played on Saturday September 25, commencing at 1.30pm.
