Although it's been another tough COVID year, Gloucester's Australia Day is all about celebrating the persons or projects that contribute to the advancement and well being of the region.
This year's categories are:
- Gloucester Local Citizen of the Year - for persons aged 25 years and over
- Gloucester Local Young Citizen of the Year - for persons under 25 years
- Gloucester Local Project of the Year
- Gloucester Local Community Business of the Year
To nominate, visit the Gloucester Australia Day website at https://www.gloucesteraustraliaday.com/ or email admin@gloucesteraustraliaday.com. Nominations close at 4pm on Monday January 10, ahead of the big event on Wednesday January 26.
Last year, the committee moved the annual event from Billabong Park to the new open-air pavilion at the Gloucester Showground due to COVID event rules. And this year, the committee has opted to return to the showground.
The event kicks off at 8am with a Welcome to Country, a flag raising ceremony and a barbecue breakfast followed by the awards presentation. Also included in the festivities are the Gloucester High School captains' address, the cutting of the cake, the ambassador's address and the announcement of the winners of the, the colouring-in competition, best business displays and best dressed competition - Australia Day theme.
The committee believes the day is about the community joining together to celebrate our nation in the heart of our own town. The celebrations are a community run event supported by the voluntary efforts of individuals, service clubs and local businesses.
It's about acknowledging the wonderful contributions of Gloucester residents, while celebrating the beauty of our town and nation.
