Police closed the road early on Wednesday morning after 10cm to 15cm of snow fell on the Tops.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Barrington Tops area manager Anthony Signor said a cold snap across NSW had resulted in the first spring snowfall of the year and the third large fall in 2014.
"It was a significant fall for the area," he said.
“The snow on most roads was compacted and became very icy, slippery and dangerous for driving."
Mr Signor said high winds in the area meant the snow melted quickly.
"We went from the heaviest snow dump in quite a while to the quickest thaw ever known on the road," he said.
Mr Signor said some snow remained in the bush for visitors to see late on Wednesday.
A National Parks patrol also reported about 3cm of snow at Gloucester Tops and cleared several fallen trees from that road.
Motorists are reminded that weather conditions in the Barrington Tops are subject to change without notice.
