The race had barely started last Friday when Yates had to dismount from his bike and re-attach the chain, but he regrouped to finish the leg in fifth spot.
The year 11 student then surged through the field, overtaking early front-runner Lachlan Clarke in the process, to race home for his first tri challenge title.
Last year’s winner Shelby Green finished equal second with Clarke.
The event comprises a 9km bike ride, 4km kayak and 4km run.
It is open to all students, either as an individual or as part of a two or three person team.
Individual entrants must be at least 14 years of age on race day.
