Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres launched the long weekend double demerits period today (Wednesday) urging drivers to get home safe for the end of the school holidays.
“We know double demerits are an effective road safety initiative - we've reduced deaths on our roads during holiday periods by a third since they were introduced,” Mr Gay said.
“This is hundreds of lives saved and many families spared the loss of a loved one, which is why we’ve refreshed the double demerits campaign.
“Today, you'll notice a new double demerits message on TV, radio and online that will be used in NSW for every holiday period and features a driver being questioned by two identical policemen - it urges us to think twice before breaking the road rules, or risk facing double the consequences.
"There's a few simple things you can do to make your weekend a good one - get your hand off your phone, if you’re going to drink have a Plan B and before you leave download our free Speed Adviser App, which tells you the speed limits and makes it easier for you to stick to them."
Mr Ayres said from October 3 to 6 inclusive, double demerits will be in force and the consequences will be severe for those who break the law.
"There’s a lot going on this weekend with major sporting events, school holidays and more people out enjoying the warmer weather, which means more people on the roads," he said.
“We’re urging drivers and riders to take extra care and be aware of risky road behaviour that attracts increased penalties such as speeding and not wearing seatbelts and helmets.
"Motorists can expect to see increased high-visibility patrols, random drug and alcohol testing, and speed enforcement to keep our roads safe.
“Last year seven people lost their lives over the October long weekend - which was the highest fatality total for this long weekend since 2010.
"This is why we’re reminding drivers to be extra careful on the roads over the next few days and get home safe."
