Gloucester was named the overall winner of the prestigious title at the Keep NSW Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards in Nundle on Sunday.
“We thought it would be pretty close, but we managed to take it out,” said an ecstatic town mayor, John Rosenbaum, who attended the presentation.
Being named the state’s tidiest town is, it turns out, more than just about being tidy, with the Keep NSW Beautiful awards campaign taking a more wholistic sustainable approach in their criteria.
Gloucester’s generosity of spirit, and its sustainable and economic approach to future challenges were listed as key factors in its win.
Gloucester’s Men’s Shed and Barrington’s irrigators were given a special mention thanks to their contribution towards the town’s well-being.
Gloucester also won its population category in the overall Tidy Town Awards for the second consecutive year.
Five other Gloucester entrants also won their categories.
The winner of the Australian Packaging Covenant Waste Management Award for population category C was the Gloucester Recycled silage wrap ‘Plasback’ scheme.
Local camping and trailer kitchen manufacturer Drifta was the winner of the Sustainable Business Award.
The award recognises the company’s use of solar electricity, recycled water, the local work force, and their donations of timber for recycling.
High school student Ryan Yates was the happy winner of the Young Legends Award for his fundraising efforts for the Cancer Council over the past two years.
The Water Conservation Award for population category A-C was the Gloucester Conserving the Barrington River project and the winner of the Office of Environment and Heritage Cultural Heritage Award for population was Gloucester Centenary Show.
Gloucester was the first winner of the NSW overall Tidy Towns Award in 1981.
“We’re pretty overwhelmed,” said Mr Rosenbaum. “It’s a real positive for the Gloucester District It’s a massive boost, and draws attention back to Gloucester for a lot of good reasons.”
Gloucester entered nine of the 11 award categories this year.
