The 53-year-old man from Wodonga is seen wearing a red shirt, a red cap and blue shorts as he walks through the Woolworths car park at White Box Rise.
About midnight, he was confronted by a group of people who attacked him, causing serious facial injuries.
Wodonga Police have spoken to the victim, who remains in a stable condition at Albury hospital.
A spokeswoman for Albury Wodonga Health said the victim was expected to remain in hospital for a few days for ongoing monitoring and treatment.
Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said police had met the man only briefly because they wanted to allow him to focus on his recovery.
“We have conducted a resident canvass door knock of Kelliher Avenue and Omeara Street for witnesses and we have also collected an amount of footage from around businesses and shops in that area,” Sergeant Simpfendorfer said.
Police declined to say how many people they believe were involved in the attack and what their motivation may have been.
But Sergeant Simpfendorfer said the man’s injuries were so severe it was lucky they were not investigating a murder.
It is believed the victim was repeatedly assaulted before the offenders left him on the ground.
He was later found by members of a police patrol unit and taken to hospital.
Sergeant Simpfendorfer said police wanted to hear from those who were in the area at the time.
“The nature of this assault and the circumstances surrounding it are very concerning; it is also concerning that these behaviours are being employed by people,” he said.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact Wodonga police.
“The level of this assault is rare, this is serious and we are lucky this didn’t turn ... fatal.”
Anyone with information should phone Wodonga police on (02) 6049 2600.
