It was all things Italian when 60 members and guests attended the yearly International Lunch on Monday July 20 organised by both Day and Evening branches. Italy was the theme and the rooms did not leave any doubt. The event was opened by councillor Frank Hooke who gave the welcoming address. He spoke of his connections with Italy when he was involved with the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial whose entry reflected Australian architecture. Guest speaker Jean Spokes took us literally by the hand relating interesting anecdotes of her trip to Italy, emphasising the importance art plays in Italian life. She spoke of the works and lives of Michaelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and discussed aspects of the Mona Lisa.

Sharee from HelloWorld also said a few words. The newly formed CWA Singers, augmented by the Gloucester Singers and lead by Elisabeth sang a sweet Italian lullaby in Italian and English and was followed by an Italian lunch.
Mid North Coast International Officer Betty Bird then addressed the gathering, speaking about the important work carried out by our Association in giving overseas aid with a recent donation of $50,000 to assist the Nepal disaster victims.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks to the branch International Officers, Sandy Tebbett, Lauren McRae and their teams.
The CWA Evening branch’s pot luck “beetroot” dinner kicked off their July meeting with a variety of very tasty dishes. Amazing what can be done with this simple vegetable. The Lemon Sour Cream cake was due this month and Virginia Monroe did get a first with her entry, Johanna Heyink a second and Virginia did also get first for her Mint and Apple Jelly. Next month cooking will be a Gluten Free Carrot Cake and/or a Victoria Sponge with recipes in the June Journal.
On Monday August 3 Gloucester Evening is hosting the CWA Group Council meeting – nominations for positions at the October AGM are due at this meeting. On Monday October 26 there will be a Pink Ribbon Breakfast.
