Outrigging canoe racer, Karren MacClure; hockey player, Stephen Coombes and basketball referee Jarrod Greedy (who wasn’t present at the awards) received recognition for their many years of contribution to their sport, presented by Dr David Gillespie MP, federal member for Lyne.
MC Mike Rabbitt from NBN news delayed the start of the awards after getting the start time mixed up, spending his early arrival listening to the footy in the carpark. Mr Rabbitt again co-hosted the annual event with Anthony Zanos from 2RE, both making it a very entertaining evening.
Once underway, Mr Rabbit interviewed former local Jason English about Mr English’s sporting achievements. Mr English is the seven time world 24 hour solo mountain biking champion taking his most recent win in Rotorua, New Zealand. He was also named the Australian Mountain Biker of the Year for a second time.
Mr English presented the Sportsstar of the Year 2105 award to Bruce Snape (hockey), who also won the Veteran award. Bell Green was awarded the Local Legend trophy for her lifetime involvement with tennis, presented by Michael Johnsen MP, Nationals member for Upper Hunter.
The Sportstar award winners 2015 are as follows: Monthly Encouragement Award: Jessica Howard (pony club); Junior: Lleyton Richards (tennis); Match Official: Geoff Hawkins (soccer); Coach: Sue Kingston (swimming); Club Administrator: Rodney Summerville (junior rugby); Event of the Year: Gloucester Open AMT & JT (tennis); Team: Under 12’s (junior rugby); Senior: Ryan Yates (cricket); Athlete with a Disability: Courtney Webeck (Barrington Public School).
