Gloucester got off to a good start when they forced a scrum deep in the Eagles half. They took the attack to the left side wing then switched back for Riley Collins to pick up a straight run by Matt Wise to score under the posts. Scott Wratten converted for the Magpies to lead 6-0. The Eagles hit straight back when their right side centre got on the outside of the defense, then got a kick inside to wrong foot the cover defense.
The score was locked at six all for most of the first half. Gloucester had a try disallowed but continued to pressure the Windale line. Mitch McDonald was put into a huge gap by Hayden Tull when Gloucester ran the ball on the sixth tackle to score. Scott Wratten added the extras. Hayden Tull troubled the Windale defense when he ran the ball and made a clean break, only for the ball to be put down as the halftime bell sounded.
In the second half, Gloucester received two penalties in a row. Scott Wratten took advantage of the field position and scored in the corner after a now trademark penetrating run.
Gloucester was guilty of giving up far too much possession but the defense in the middle was seldom breached. Gloucester’s backrowers worked overtime and Mitch Turnball up front had a solid game in attack and defense. The return of Ray Jacobs, Alex Jones and Matt Higgins to the Magpies bench, meant the Eagles were not given an inch of respite.
Coen Durbridge put the game out of reach for the Eagles when he scooped up a ball close to the Magpie line and outpaced the defense in a 90 metre run to score under the posts.
Windale scored a late try, wide out after the Magpies lost possession on their line.
